I am excited about introducing the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and the Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) into my practice. Movement is at the core of our early growth and development and remains the central theme throughout life, but until recently there hasn’t been a way to screen risk factors associated with movement activities.
The FMS is a predictive system of seven tests designed to rank movement patterns basic to the normal function of active people with prescribed individual corrective exercises to normalize movement. The FMS is designed for individuals who do not have current pain or a recent known injury. If these are present then the SFMA comes into play.
The SFMA is a movement based diagnostic system with seven top tier tests designed to access fundamental movement patterns in those with pain. I can then identify meaningful impairments that may seem unrelated to the pain complaint, but may be the cause. This is the concept of regional interdependence: that seemingly unrelated impairments in a remote anatomical region may contribute to the person’s primary complaint. The SFMA helps guide me to the most dysfunctional but non-painful movement pattern where targeted therapeutic exercises are prescribed. It provides a systematic process for the best therapeutic and corrective exercise intervention.
