A friend dragged me to his chiropractor, who discovered a subluxation exactly where I landed from a fall off a horse at least 15 years previously. It took a few treatments before it would release at all, but it helped so much that I began to consider chiropractic as a possible future career. I was a fine dining waiter at Kapalua Resort on Maui, and was looking at the dreaded 30th birthday looming in my future. I figured that it was time for a change, so I moved back to my home state of Minnesota (a shock after 6 years in Hawaii!), applied to Northwestern College of Chiropractic, was accepted, and my new life began. My original plan was to move back to Maui upon getting my doctorate, but we ended up in the Rogue Valley instead.
I have a BS in Biology from the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1977, and I received my Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Northwestern College of Chiropractic (now Northwestern Health Sciences University) in Bloomington, Minnesota in 1988. I was in with the first group of Oregon chiropractors to obtain a postgraduate diplomat as a Certified Chiropractic Sports Practitioner in 1992.
I had an instructor in chiropractic school who said that if you treat everyone who walks into your office the same as you would a loved family member, you will never go wrong. I took that to heart, and it has been my philosophy ever since. I will try to educate you about what is wrong, but I will also try to show you what we both can do to make it right. Self responsibility is a big key, and while the acute phase care might be 80% me and 20% you, shortly down the line that ratio will switch, and if you don’t take an active role in your recovery and maintenance, it may take longer, be more expensive, and flare-ups in the future will be more likely.
My goal is to help get you out of pain, but also to educate you in your health and how to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle.
I am married with two sons and a stepdaughter. When my boys were younger I was involved in their various sports activities (they are a couple jocks), from coaching to spectating. I started parenthood a little later in life, so there are no grand kids yet. I try to lead an active lifestyle: hiking, biking, and getting into the gym every lunch hour during the work week. Growing bonsai trees, and more recently creating artwork, have become hobbies/obsessions, and my wife, Lyn, and I have recently started an enterprise called Artisan Bonsai where both of these can be incorporated.
For a number of years now, my office has been involved with doing sports participation physicals for the local schools and Pop Warner football. We do these at a reduced fee and donate a significant portion back to the organization or school.
I try to walk the talk by exercising regularly, including stretching and core work, and eating intelligently. I’m not a fanatic about either and believe that moderation is the key. I try to avoid medications for the most part, but there is a time and a place for them, and I’m not adverse to referring to an MD for pain meds when necessary.
I try to get a chiropractic treatment at least twice a month, but to be honest, sometimes that can be difficult. Both my boys were adjusted within the first week after their birth, and getting an adjustment is still the first request when they’re not feeling well or after a sports injury.
